| 04/09/96 RMIUG Meeting
- Al Gore and Bill Gates Speak
April Fools!
The Tuesday, April 9 meeting of the Rocky
Mountain Internet Users Group (RMIUG) has
two excellent speakers who are eminently
qualified to talk to us about how the government
and private sector view/use the Internet
- this is a meeting not to be missed!
- Al Gore (vice-president@whitehouse.gov)
will discuss how government feels about
the Internet. Mr. Gore is often called
the "Father of the Information Superhighway"
for his work when he was a Senator due
to his tireless efforts in advocating
the Internet when it was much less well
known. He is visiting US West that day,
and has agreed to join us that evening
as a way of continuing his "grass roots"
approach to making the Internet successful.
- Bill Gates (billg@microsoft.com) will
present the private sector point of view.
Mr. Gates is well known as the founder
and CEO of Microsoft, and his company
has gotten quite aggressive WRT the Internet
in the last year or so. Mr. Gates agreed
to talk to RMIUG over a year ago when
his schedule permitted. And it is an amazing
coincidence that he is in town (meeting
w/TCI) the same day as Mr. Gore ... and
has agreed to share the stage with him.
The RMIUG meeting is Tuesday, April 9,
from 7:00 - 9:00 pm (with optional 6:30
pm start for informal networking and refreshments).
The meeting will be held at the Department
of Commerce (NIST) Building at 325 Broadway
in Boulder, one traffic light South of Baseline.
This facility holds 510 people (although
the Secret Service says that we can not
have people in the first three rows). Park
in the Dept. of Commerce lot, go in the
main door (faces East), and find the main
auditorium just to the right of the main
entrance. The meeting is free and open to
the public, but we will be passing the hat
(ie. Nike shoebox ;-) to defray the room
rental charge we incur (Mr. Gates has graciously
offered to pay half of the cost of this
meeting).
RMIUG appreciates the ongoing support
from Internet One of Boulder for sponsoring
refreshments and XOR Network Engineering
for administration of RMIUG's electronic
discussion lists & WWW site. We also appreciate
the assistance from long-time RMIUG'er John
Malone with arranging our speakers.
Consultants and companies are invited
to bring Internet-related product information,
brochures, and business cards which will
be displayed on an information table in
the lobby.
There is an email mailing list set up
for this group. General information can
be obtained by sending an Email to rmiug@rmiug.org
which will generate an auto-reply message
that tells you about the lists and how to
subscribe. You can also reach the RMIUG
"Executive" Committee at rmiug-comm@rmiug.org.
Our WWW site is at http://www.rmiug.org/rmiug/

P.S. The Secret Service has also informed
us that there will be some special security
requirements ... we will send out a follow-up
message in a few days that will outline
these. |
